Evening rides!

Text 'Evenings are back' on photo of bicycle propped against stone wall on dirt track above valley. Evening sun illuminates daffodils.

Evenings are bright again and perfect for a quick leisurely bike ride. Here is a little celebration of the joy that brings.

Never mind that my brain is fuzzled by losing an hour with the pointless changing of the clocks, leaving me up late and sluggish at dawn. Yesterday I set off on a cycle loop at 6.30pm.

Ah, evenings!

Evenings when you’ve got a descent (or climb) to yourself (especially if the road is closed).

Bicycled propped against works cabin on road closed by countless orange barriers for gas works.

Evenings when the canal is calm.

An empty, still canal. Trees in middle distance lit by evening sun.

Evenings when the crossing changes instantly. (Thanks TfGM for making that happen.)

A toucan road crossing about to turn green, bicycle handlebars in view.

Evenings when we’re winning against the barriers! (More on this in a separate post soon.)

Freshly installed bollards at the entrance to a traffic-free multi user trail. Fresh asphalt covers where an a-frame barrier used to block the route.

Evenings when the blackthorn is popping.

Blackthorn blossom against a cycle trail in evening sun.

Evenings when you realise you’re miles from home, but keep going.

Tall conifer trees line a cycle trail, their tops lit by golden sunset.

Evenings when all the time, the light is changing.

A bicycle propped against a low fence along a traffic free cycle trail, a dramatic golden sunset lighting the sky between rows of winter trees in a field beside.

Evenings encountering something new.

A young lamb raises its head toward the photographer inquisitively.

Evenings when the gates are still open. (Hooray for 8pm summer Lyme!)

A gate with a sign "welcome to Lyme" and opening times "until 8pm".

Evenings when these oak trees weren’t surrounded by a car park.

A blue and yellow dusk sky behind bare wintry oak trees framing a narrow road, a crescent moon above, grassland surrounding.

Evenings when you’re the last guest to leave.

A stately home and its empty car park lit by the last glow of the evening sun.

Ah, evenings. And plenty more to come.

‘Everyday adventures’ you can fit into a regular day are a big part of what I want to share with Peaks & Puddles. This route included parts of Over Hills Around New Mills, Mills and Brows, Wood Lanes Off Middlewood and Lyme Loop. Many of the other shorter Peaks & Puddles Rides also make great evening loops, if you’re lucky enough to be fairly local. Have fun chasing that sunset!
